LGBT History Month Exhibit
October 4 – The Pride Center is hosting an art exhibit in recognition of LGBT History Month from noon to 1 p.m. in the Bronco Student Center. Graduate and Professional School Day
October 6 – The Golden Key International Honor Society will host its 13th Annual Graduate and Professional School Day. Representatives from more than 100 universities and programs will be on hand with applications and information in the University Quad from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, contact Karen Capestro at klcapestro@csupomona.edu or (909) 869-2341.

New ASI Chapter Meeting
October 15 – A chapter meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in the Bronco Student Center’s England Evans Board Room. Family Fun at Annual Pumpkin Festival
October 15-16 – Everyone is invited to pick Cal Poly Pomona-grown pumpkins at this popular annual event. Other activities include insect fair, horse rides, a petting zoo, entertainment and a variety of food and game booths sponsored by the College of Agriculture student clubs. Read more...

Inaugural Golf Tourney for Track Boosters
October 17 – The Golden Spikes Golf Tournament will be held at the Eagle Glen Golf Club in Corona. The tournament will benefit scholarship programs for the men’s and women’s cross country and track & field teams. Read more…

Wine-tasting Seminars
October 20 and November 17 – The College of the Extended University is launching a new series of wine-tasting seminars designed to take the mystery out of selecting the perfect wine. Each two-hour seminar will be held at Kellogg House Pomona and will focus on tasting and describing wine, selecting wines in restaurants and storing and serving wine. Cost is $45 per person. Lisa LingLisa Ling Explores Leadership Potential
October 21 – Host of the National Geographic series Explorer, Lisa Ling has covered the looting of antiquities in war-torn Iraq, interviewed drug lords in Columbia and journeyed to the bottom of the Atlantic in search of gold. Her next adventure is as the keynote speaker at the “Dream, Dare, Do Leadership Conference” for Cal Poly Pomona student leaders. The keynote session, open to alumni and the public, will be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Bronco Student Center. Seating is limited. Read more…

Visual Voices Art Exhibit
October 25-26 – This exhibit features work by students and community agencies that use art as a form of healing and to increase awareness to domestic violence and sexual assault. Held in the W. Keith and Janet Kellogg University Art Gallery from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the exhibit features a speaker and light refreshments at noon. Giving the Gift of Life
October 25-27 – Millions of Americans are helping in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. Due to various blood supplies normally allocated to Southern California that are being diverted to the relief effort, local blood supplies are in need. Read more…

Just for the Health of It
October 27 – Try out the new XBOX interactive fitness demos and receive free health assessments and prizes at the university’s Wellness Fair, sponsored by the American Red Cross, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Bronco Student Center. Attendees can even learn about the health of their computers with a special exhibit on security and virus protection. Paul Viveros ’92, Hotel & Restaurant Management

In retrospect, Paul Viveros should have listened to his father instead of his high school academic counselor. Considered an average student in high school, Viveros took note when his advisors insisted he would not be able to face the academic rigors of a university education. Viveros followed his brothers’ hardworking example, enrolling in the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) certification program at Mt. San Antonio College. Trade certificate in hand, he worked in the field for five years, soaking up all he could about the ins and outs of running a successful business. By the time he started his own company, he realized that it was time to master college. Read more...

Enhancing Student Success for Net Generation Highlights Fall Conference Symposium
Most of the 3,000 freshmen students who began their university careers at Cal Poly Pomona a few weeks ago come from the "net generation." Also known as the millennial generation, these students - born in or after 1982 - grew up with today's technology, including computers and cell phones. Read more...

In Memoriam: University Benefactor W. Keith Kellogg II
W. Keith Kellogg II, a long-time university donor and member of the Kellogg family, died Sept. 16. He was 98 years old. W. Keith Kellogg II is the namesake and grandson of cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg, one of the university's primary founders. A gift of 825 acres in 1949 by W.K. Kellogg eventually led to what is now Cal Poly Pomona. Read more...

CSU LEADER - CSU Enrolls Katrina-Affected Students
Following through on the California State University's commitment to accept students who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina, CSU campuses have currently admitted a total of 388 students and enrolled 177 - a number that is projected to grow in the coming days. Read more...

President Ortiz Gives State of University Address at Fall Conference
To kick off the 2005-06 academic year, faculty and staff converged on Sept. 19 to participate in Fall Conference. University President Michael Ortiz led the event with his State of the University address during the annual all-university breakfast and convocation in the Engineering Meadow. Read more...

Students Help Residents Understand Self-Help Legal Access
Political science junIor Carmen Franklin distinctly remembers the first person she helped navigate through the complex civil justice system — an 18-year-old single mother struggling to provide for her 6-month-old baby. The baby’s father wasn’t providing child support, and the young mother had come to the Pomona Self-Help Legal Access Center seeking guidance filling out the proper custody, visitation and child support forms. Urban and Regional Planning Chapter Approved
The Urban and Regional Planning Alumni Chapter was chartered in September and is already planning several events: meeting with current students, faculty/alumni potluck, Dale Awards, day at the ballpark, and more. Chapter involvement provides an opportunity to network and catch up with other alumni plus explore career avenues, increase knowledge of planning, and just have fun! Business Alumni Chapter Hits Home Run
The Angels won on Sept. 16 and so did the College of Business Alumni Chapter at this popular ballpark event, slated to be an annual adventure. In addition to a great game, it also featured a Mexican food buffet and time for reminiscing and networking with alumni and College of Business Administration Dean David Klock.
