This month in Poly @lumni, the Upcoming Events section is packed with things to do. Also, meet October's Alumni Spotlight, Walter Allen III, a former ASI president and busy man with two demanding jobs. In his "day job" he battles America's ongoing war on drugs as an assistant chief with California's Department of Justice, Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement, and after work he helps run the city of Covina as its mayor.

Meet Cal Poly Pomona's President at Regional Alumni Receptions
Fall Quarter – With his Thomas Guide in hand, President J. Michael Ortiz will travel across the state this year to personally introduce himself and his wife, Betty, to Cal Poly Pomona alumni in a series of receptions. This month, President Ortiz will kick off the alumni receptions at the Bronco Student Center on the Cal Poly Pomona campus. Then he's off to meet former Broncos living in or around Orange County. October 18 & 19 – It's the 11th Annual Pumpkin Festival, plus Insect Fair. For one weekend in the fall, people from all over the Inland Valley descend on Cal Poly Pomona's campus for a day of picking their own pumpkins and visiting the College of Agriculture's vast collection of bugs. Read more...

Walter Allen III '75, Urban and Regional Planning
Mayor of the City of Covina

Walter Allen III '75, urban and regional planning, lives by a simple edict. The mayor of Covina and an assistant chief in California's Deparment of Justice, Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement believes that people are inherently good, and he just wants to make sure they are taken care of.

"The thing that I've always attempted to do throughout my career is serve the people," he says. "When I'm in a position, be it a lieutenant colonel in the civil air patrol, or mayor, or Eucharistic minister, my mission is to serve the people — not just look for leadership opportunities."
