Ahimsa Center Presents “What Makes Life Meaningful”

August 1 to 18 – The Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center and the Academy for Literacy Through the Arts is hosting their third summer session of the Summer Arts Academy. Sometimes silver spoons are not an option, a fact that Tom Mauss noted at an early age. He would not inherit a vast fortune and a dream job. He could, however, through education and hard work, create his own dream job, and perhaps it would be all the more sweet for having earned it the hard way. Mauss, who received his master's in business administration from Cal Poly Pomona in 1996, is not easily discouraged from achieving his goals. Read more…

Bigger, Better Summer Quarter is a Gigantic Success
The early results are in. Although still in summer quarter's add/drop period, Enrollment Management & Services predicts a record-high 7,900 students on campus this summer, which is a 24 percent increase from 2004 and a 14 percent increase from 2005. Entering student enrollment is even more impressiveup 34 percent from summer 2005. Read more...

New CSU Budget Honors Compact
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a new state budget that provides $226 million in new revenue for the California State University, fully funding the trustees' budget request for 2006/07, and providing enough funds to eliminate student fee increases scheduled for fall 2006. Read more...

Apple iTunes U at Cal Poly Pomona
iTunes and podcasting as an educational enhancement? Of course. New trends in education suggest students want access to more flexibility with their learning opportunities, and they specifically want to take advantage of mobile media technologies to enhance coursework. Cal Poly Pomona has responded and is one of the select universities in the country to become an Apple iTunes U campus. Read more...

Mega Win for Mega Bites: University Team Places 3rd in National Competition
Food allergies affect thousands of people in the United States alone, triggering 30,000 trips to the emergency room and 150 to 200 deaths per year. According to the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network, it is vital to avoid the allergen completely as it can take only a trace amount to trigger a moderate to severe reaction. A team of Cal Poly Pomona students has taken this issue to heart, creating a non-gluten nutrition bar called "Mega Bites" to an impressive third place finish in a national product development competition. "Seamless Housing" Nets Top Prize for Cal Poly Pomona Architecture Student
"Small Lots, Smart Designs," a design competition for professional and student architects, named Cal Poly Pomona architecture student Sergio Marquez as one of its co-1st place honorees. Challenged to meet the current needs of the Los Angeles housing market, architects were asked to design affordable, comfortable community-oriented living spaces to re-develop thousands of vacant and underutilized lots throughout the city. New Planned Giving Director Helps Donors Leverage Tax Savings
Often the new faces on campus are just familiar faces that have moved. That's what happened on July 1, when Cal Poly Pomona accounting professor John Karayan, J.D., Ph.D., began serving as director of planned giving in the division of University Advancement. In his new role, he will focus on helping donors and their financial advisors navigate the complexity of federal and state gift laws so that personal tax savings can enhance contributions to the university. Concert Under the Stars Fundraiser
A community outreach program by the College of Letters, Arts & Social Sciences, the Academy for Literacy Through the Arts was chosen to benefit from the annual Hafif Family Foundation, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, and Law Offices of Herbert Hafif Concerts Under the Stars Fundraiser. This year's concerts will be held at the Hafif Estate in the foothills of La Verne each Saturday in August (5, 12, 19, 26). Read more...

Jeffery Swanson Named AVP for University Development
Jeff Swanson, the assistant vice president for advancement at La Sierra University and a former director of development for Cal Poly Pomona's College of Engineering, has been named associate vice president for University Development. His appointment begins on August 14. Read more...
