This New Year's Day marks the 60th time the Cal Poly Universities have built a Rose Parade float. The Rose Float is deeply rooted in tradition – marking the longest-running student activity at Cal Poly Pomona. If you've never volunteered to decorate the float or you feel like doing it all over again–it's not too late! Join us Dec. 26-31, during Deco Week in Pasadena.

Art Exhibit Features Historic Architectural Paintings on Stones
Dec. 7-20 – An exhibit by Claremont-based artist Dawn Grimes Myers titled Sketched in Stone: Capturing Architectural History on Stone features creative paintings of historic architectural landmarks. The show is at the Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center, which is open from noon - 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Read more...

Tournament of Roses Parade
Jan. 1 – The Cal Poly Universities Rose Float Club and Committee are in the final stages of preparing for the 2008 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. “Guardians of Harmony” is the 60th float entry for the Cal Poly Universities.

Tsunamis - Stealth Killers
Jan. 17 – The department of Geologic Sciences presents its Visiting Speakers Series. John Clague, one of Canada's leading authorities in Quaternary and environmental earth sciences, will be speaking. Join fellow alumni and students from noon - 1 p.m. in the Bronco Student Center. 12th Annual Hilda L. Solis Scholarship Dinner & Reception
Feb. 22 – Sponsored by the César E. Chávez Center for Higher Education and the Raíces Alumni Chapter, this event is named after Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis an alumna of Cal Poly Pomona. Nearly 25 years ago, Donald Tang found himself taking public transportation across Orange County on his way to daily English language classes in Mission Viejo.

“The bus to the school was full of retired senior citizens,” Tang says. “They rode every day to Laguna Beach to relax, shop and visit museums.”

Tang's fellow passengers grew interested in the Chinese teenager who was a daily companion on the bus. Read more...

President OrtizA Message From President Ortiz
Before leaving for the holiday break, university President Michael Ortiz invites the campus community to watch his last video address for the 2007 calendar year. During his approximately 12-minute video, Ortiz discusses the Prioritization and Recovery Initiative, the October demonstration regarding math and science classes, the university's budget, the second annual EMPIRE Symposium and the Rose Float. The address also includes comments about energy conservation efforts and construction projects on campus. Read more...

Bulb Exchange Sheds Light on Conservation
Students living in university housing are being encouraged to think globally and act locally starting with one light bulb at a time. On Nov. 28 and Nov. 29 at Alamitos Hall, more than 130 student residents traded incandescent light bulbs for the more energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps. Read more...

NSF Grant Boosts Cyber Security Studies
A $600,000 cyber security grant awarded to Cal Poly Pomona and a consortium of colleges could bolster the Southern California education system and workforce for years to come. The universities and colleges participating in the grant aim to produce more graduates who specialize in cyber security, also known as information assurance. Read more...
