This spring, Cal Poly Pomona will host two events that create wonderful opportunities for alumni to visit campus. On May 4, the university will host its first Southern California Tasting & Auction. Guests will be able to sample cuisine and wine from some of the region's best restaurants in a beautiful garden setting. Also, on May 30, the College of Engineering will celebrate its 50th anniversary. This month's Poly @lumni features both events and an Alumni Spotlight on Nato Flores, ‘79 who earned his degree in mechanical engineering.

Teacher Job Fair

Spring Career Day & Summer Job Fair

Annual Evening With Industry Event
April 17 – The Management & Human Resources department is hosting its annual Evening With Industry event. Alumni are invited to come network with top industry professionals and fellow alumni. This year’s event is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Bronco Student Center, Ursa Minor Room. Pride & Excellence Scholarship Dinner 2008
April 17 – Sponsored by the Pride Center, the Lambda Chapter of the Cal Poly Pomona Alumni Association and Pride Alliance, this event celebrates and honors students for their contributions to the LGBT community.  A special Donor’s Reception will be held at 5 p.m. at Kellogg West Conference Center, followed by the dinner and award presentation from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person. You can also sponsor a student who might otherwise not be able to attend the dinner for the small cost of $28. Please RSVP to Pride Center Coordinator Fernando Estrada at festrada@csupomona.edu.

Out For Blood II
April 21-23 – Once again, Cal Poly Pomona is gearing up to beat Mt. SAC in their annual “Out for Blood” campaign. Sign up to donate blood from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Bronco Student Center, Orion Suite. In addition to showing Mt. SAC who has more “spirit” you’ll be saving up to three lives with each unit of donated blood. It’s easy to sign up…go to www.givelife.org and enter sponsor code “CALPOLY.” All presenting donors will receive a coupon for a free Chipotle burrito!

Distinguished Alumni Awards Event
April 25 – Celebrating its 48th year, the Alumni Association Association’s Distinguished Alumni Awards will honor eight outstanding alumni who have achieved prominence through their profession and within the community. GMAT (Graduate Management Admission) Test Prep Workshop
April 26 – The College of the Extended University is offering a test prep workshop for those interested in taking the April session for the GMAT. This course provides students with expert instruction, introduces test-taking strategies and offers timed-practice testing. 12th Annual Information Technology Competition
May 3 – This event invites students from various schools in Southern California to compete in one of four business cases by providing a solution to the case and presenting it to judges on the day of the competition. Cases to compete include: business systems analysis, computer forensics, Web application development and telecommunications. For each case, there is a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize of $1000, $500 and $250. Read More…

Southern California Tasting & Auction
May 4 – The university will host the inaugural Southern California Tasting & Auction - an adventure of tastes, sights, and sounds on May 4. Auction items include a chance to meet the cast of Hannah Montana, a two-year lease on a Hybrid Mazda, VIP package for four to the Las Vegas World Championship Bull Riding finals, trips to the south of France, Greece, Hawaii and more. 2nd Annual Tractor & Car Show at the Farm Store

Alumni-Student Association Plant Sciences, Landscape Irrigation and Agriculture Engineering Departments’ Annual Spring Awards Banquet

College of Engineering 50th Anniversary Celebration and Symposium
May 30 Alumni are encouraged to attend the College of Engineering’s 50th anniversary celebration. The event will be held the same day as the Engineering Projects Symposium so alumni can come and see first hand what today’s talented students are accomplishing. Nato FloresBuilding Memories
Contractor Nato Flores ’79 Finds His Place in the World

The Columbia Memorial Space Science Learning Center in Downey will undoubtedly be a place of remembrance for thousands of future visitors. But for Nato Flores, this particular development is also part of his personal history.

It is being built on the same piece of land where Flores attended high school at Rockwell International. The son of a migrant worker, Flores is now founder and president of the multimillion dollar company developing the space center. Occasionally, he hops in his two-seat airplane to fly to a business meeting in San Diego. The plane is a luxury item, but it’s also a symbol of just how far Flores has come. Read more...

Farm Store Sells Hydroponic, Cal Poly Pomona-Grown Lettuce
As cities and populations continue to grow pushing farms farther away from urban areas, it can be difficult to find hearty locally grown produce. But that's not the case at the Farm Store where one can now buy hydroponically grown lettuce for a scant $1 a head. In one of eight new state-of-the-art greenhouses at the university, the College of Agriculture is cultivating hydroponic lettuce year-round and selling it a mere hundred yards away at the Farm Store at Kellogg Ranch. Horse Show Team Saddles Up For Post-Season Championships
Cal Poly Pomona's Horse Show Team is riding its regional victories all the way to New York and Idaho to further its stance in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association competitions. The Hunt Seat team will compete in the Zone 8 Championships at the College of Southern Idaho on April 12, while the Western team will head to the semifinals in Cazenovia, New York on March 30. Cal Poly Pomona Launches Connect-Ed Emergency Alert System
Nearly one year ago, Virginia Tech University experienced the unthinkable when a gunman killed 32 people and himself in the bloodiest day in U.S. education history. Northern Illinois experienced its own tragedy recently with seven deaths at the hands of a campus shooter. These tragedies have brought fine focus to how a university communicates with its community during an emergency. Read more...
