When landscape architecture students in this issue's spotlight discovered the last remaining wetland environment at the mouth of the Dominguez Channel, they were recognized as making a positive impact in the community. This month, the landscape architecture program celebrates its 50 th anniversary. You'll get all the scoop in this issue, as well as unearth plenty of other milestones and events across campus.

Teacher Job Fair
April 5 – Are you interested in working with children? Attend the Teacher Job Fair to speak with over 60 school districts under "one roof." All majors are welcome to attend. Even if you are not a credentialed teacher, this job fair will enable you to explore about employment opportunities. Be prepared for on-the-spot interviews. Read more…

Self-Defense Class for Women
April 9 – Learn tips on personal safety, physical defense techniques and assertiveness training at a self defense class for women. The event is hosted by the Stop Violence Office as part of the Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April. Class to take place 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at Java the Hut (Building 71). Spring Career Day
April 19 – Make valuable connections at this large, outdoor job fair for part-time, summer internships, temporary and full-time career positions. More than 200 leading nationally recognized employers will be participating from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the University Quad. All majors, class levels, and alumni are welcome. “Out for Blood” Round II
April 23-25 – The race is on. Cal Poly Pomona hopes to beat Mt. SAC during a 3-day blood drive at the Bronco Student Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. After losing to Mt. Sac in October by 55 units, Cal Poly Pomona is out for blood. Make your donor appointment online at www.givelife.org and enter sponsor code “CLPOLY.”

Landscape Architecture Department Celebrates 50 Years
April 23-29 – Celebrate the collective past, present and future of the Department of Landscape Architecture. This six-day event is designed to reconnect alumni, friends and former faculty. Read more…

Wireless Telecommunications Symposium Draws Industry Leaders

11th Annual Hilda Solis Scholarship Dinner & Reception
May 11 – Recognizing the academic achievements and community involvement of Cal Poly Pomona students, this event is sponsored by the Cesar E. Chavez Center for Higher Education and Raices (Hispanic) Alumni Chapter. Farm Store at Kellogg Ranch Hosts First Tractor and Rod Show
May 12 – The Farm Store at Kellogg Ranch will host its first Tractor & Rod Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Alumni, students, faculty and staff are invited to enter their pre-1980 hot rod in the car show for great prizes. A tractor parade, tractor or horse rides and straw mazes are part of the entertainment. University- grown produce will be available along with on-site fresh cooking. Reconnecting Wilmington
Project Tackles Extreme Urban Landscape Yet Buoys Up Community Pride

Cargo cranes tower over the Pacific Ocean like sentry soldiers standing ready for battle. The oil refineries in the outer waters light up the night sky with their around-the-clock production. Industrialization, poverty and pollution have all taken their toll on the residents of this port city of Wilmington.

This is the extreme urban landscape that Gerald O. Taylor, ASLA, assistant professor of landscape architecture at Cal Poly Pomona, selected for his spring 2006 Advanced Landscape Design students. Their assignment was to explore the critical issues facing Wilmington and select a project that would improve the health of the residents living in this under-served community. Read more...

CSU, Faculty Union Reach Tentative Agreement on Four-Year Contract
The California State University announced on April 3 that it has reached a tentative agreement with the California Faculty Association that provides all CSU faculty with base pay increases of 20.7 percent over a four-year period, as well as step increases for those eligible, making the package worth 24.87 percent.Read more...

Viggo Butler Honored as 2007 Alumnus Advocate of the Year
Alumnus Viggo Butler was honored Monday, March 19, as a California State University 2007 Alumnus Advocate of the Year. With close to 2 million alumni in its ranks, the CSU has one of the largest networks of advocates in the country. Each of the 23 campuses relies on its alumni to build support at the local, state and federal levels. Read more...

Olympian Billy Mills To Visit Campus
In 1964, track and field runner Billy Mills was a virtual unknown. With only 100 meters left in the 10,000-meter race, he pulled ahead of the competition, set an Olympic record and took home a gold medal. It was one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history. He became a household name and his story was captured in the movie Running Brave. Mills will share his story with the campus community Tuesday, April 10. Read more...

2007 Dale Prize Winners to be Honored
The Urban & Regional Planning department has announced the winners of the 2007 William R. and June Dale Prize for Excellence in Urban Planning. Jonathan Barnett and Sarah James will be honored at an upcoming colloquium and banquet for their work in fostering an ecological approach to urban design, focusing on innovations, experiments and best practices. University Art Gallery Hosts Retrospective
Art professor Stanley Wilson may be retiring this June after a 34-year career at Cal Poly Pomona, but the artist in him will never truly retire. On March 25, the eve of Wilson's last quarter at Cal Poly Pomona, the Keith & Janet Kellogg University Art Gallery will present a retrospective of his work from 1973 to the present. Circle Named in Honor of Ron Simons
The road that runs directly in front of the CLA Building was re-named once again in a ceremony Tuesday, March 20. The event marked 11th annual Bronco Circle Naming Unveiling Ceremony and honored the man known as "Mr. Cal Poly Pomona," Ron Simons, who has been a fixture on campus for more than 45 years. In Memoriam: Professor James Weidman
Dr. James Weidman, professor in the Food Marketing & Agribusiness Management/Agricultural Education Department, died on March 16 after a battle with cancer. Weidman joined the College of Agriculture faculty in the fall of 1981. Read more...
