April is blooming with activities for every taste, from an exclusive night at the opera with soprano Carol Vaness ’74, several college-based anniversaries and functions, new booster club gatherings, as well as an annual reception honoring the nine Distinguished Alumni of the year. And what would the springtime be without flowers? Just ask ornamental horticulture alumnus Norman Fang ’88, this month’s Alumni Spotlight, who can tell us a thing or two about orchids.

Golden Goal Booster Club
April 5 – The Inaugural meeting of Golden Goal, the booster club to support soccer, will be held from 6-8 p.m. at Scoreboard Restaurant in Pomona. California Indian Storytelling and Cultural Festival
April 9 – Enjoy cultural demonstrations, children’s village and story telling at an event sponsored by the Native American Enrollment Task Force and N.A.T.I.V.E. Student Club. Proceeds will establish the Toyporina Scholarship fund for American Indian Students. Read more...

Fourth Annual Pride & Excellence Scholarship Dinner
April 14 – Lambda Alumni will be awarding several book scholarships to students. This event, which is an opportunity to renew old friendships and meet others in the community, is sponsored by Lambda Alumni, the Pride Center and the Pride Alliance Faculty/Staff Association. Urban & Regional Planning Dale Prize Colloquium and Banquet
April 14 – The department of Urban & Regional Planning has announced the winners of the 2005 William R. and June Dale Prize for Excellence in Urban Planning to be honored at an upcoming colloquium and banquet. The Dale Prize is awarded annually to recognize planning excellence and is the only planning award that creates dialogue between planning scholars and practitioners. Read more...

34th Annual Earth Day Offers Activities for All
April 22 – Celebrate with earth-friendly activities, educational booths and demonstrations for all ages from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at this free event held at the John T. Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies (CRS). The CRS is a living laboratory that strives to demonstrate ways the needs of a community can be met in a sustainable fashion while improving the environment. An Exclusive Night at the San Diego Opera
April 22 – The Cal Poly Pomona Alumni Association Presents “A Night at the San Diego Opera” with Cal Poly Pomona alumna and leading operatic soprano Carol Vaness. Join Cal Poly Pomona alumni and friends for an exclusive pre-opera backstage tour at 6:30 p.m. before the 8 p.m. performance. Alumni Soccer Game and Mixer

Business Administration and Engineering Colleges Present 2005 Wireless Technology Symposium
April 28-30 – An interdisciplinary wireless telecommunications conference will be held at Kellogg West featured leading industry speakers from Lucent, Nokia, Nortel, Cingular, QUALCOMM, PriceWaterhouseCoopers as well as the U.S. Department of Defense. For more information, click here…

Noman Fang ’88, Ornamental Horticulture
Owner, Norman’s Orchids

A June without orchids? Not if Norman Fang has his way. Brides and prom dates across the country rely on these rare, sturdy flowers that come in a plethora of amazing colors and sizes. Orchids pique our interest with exotic names such as butterfly kisses, fuchsia pearls and sweet berry phalaenopsis then sustain our fascination with exquisitely shaped petals and structural diversity.

“Orchids are not only beautiful, they are also practical,” says Norman Fang, a Cal Poly Pomona alumnus and owner of Norman’s Orchids in Montclair, a family-run business that began as an end-of-class project in 1986. Read more...

Broncos Fall to Texans 58-56 in Elite Eight Face-off; Finish Season with 24-7 Record
Cal Poly Pomona's men's basketball team, the 2005 NCAA Division II West Region champs, saw its season come to an end on March 23 with a 58-56 loss to Tarleton State in the Elite Eight. Cal Poly Pomona ends its season with a 24-7 record. The Broncos led by as many as 10 points in the second half and still held a nine-point edge with 4:23 remaining. Jonathan Boyd had a team-high 12 points for the Broncos, who were making their second appearance in the Elite Eight in the past three years. Read more...

Founders' Celebration Raises $325,000 for Student Scholarships
Founders' Celebration 2005: A Goodtime with Glen Campbell raised a whopping $325,150 net for Cal Poly Pomona student scholarships and academic enrichment. Approximately 600 alumni, faculty, staff, community leaders and university supporters attended the benefit gala on March 5 at the Pacific Palms Resort in the City of Industry. Read more...

Alumnus Jack Dangermond to Earn Honorary Doctorate
Jack Dangermond, the founder and president of Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) and a 1967 Cal Poly Pomona alumnus, has been selected by the California State University Board of Trustees to receive the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters (L.H.D.). Dangermond was nominated for the award by Cal Poly Pomona's Honorary Doctorate Committee, made up of five senior faculty members from five different colleges. Read more...

Computer Information Systems Earns National Designation for Excellence in Information Assurance Education
The Department of Homeland Security and National Security Agency have honored Cal Poly Pomona's Computer Information Systems (CIS) department with the designation National Center of Excellence in Information Assurance Education for academic years 2005-2008. Read more..

Coach Carter Speaks to Students on Value of Education
Ken Carter, the man whose story inspired the recent movie Coach Carter, spoke to more than 150 Cal Poly Pomona students about the importance of education and teamwork during a speech titled "Built to Win" on March 7 in the University Theatre. Read more...
