Since graduating from the College of Environmental Design in 1973, Robert Kain has been a staunch supporter of his alma mater. He has participated in many alumni activities such as Professor for a Day, Mentoring, Dinner for 12 Strangers, and Job Shadow, as well as serving as the current president of the Cal Poly Pomona University Educational Trust.

“At Cal Poly Pomona I discovered that ‘learn by doing’ is more than just a motto, it is a way to do your life, to do your business,” says Kain. “This practical background has served me well from the halls of Cal Poly Pomona to the corporate boardroom.”

An employee of HMC Architects since 1978, he has held a number of high-level positions, including chairman of the board, managing principal, and director of healthcare. In his professional capacity, Kain’s emphasis is on project management and planning and design of hospitals, medical facilities and outpatient clinics. His work includes overseeing projects such as the Kaiser Bellflower Medical Center Replacement Hospital, the Veterans Administration Long Beach Medical Center’s Surgery Relocation/Spinal Cord Injury Project, and the new Rehabilitation Institute for Loma Linda University Medical Center, among many others.

“HMC Architects has always had a symbiotic relationship with Cal Poly Pomona,” Kain says. “We provide student support and in return we have access to top students who are ready to practice architecture immediately after graduation. These students are the future of our firm.”

Kain serves as chairman of the board of directors for the San Bernardino Children’sFund and is director of the Old Baldy Council Explorer Post. In 1999, he was honored with the Ernst & Kain LLP’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the services area and in 2002 he was named Arrowhead Distinguished Executive Officer by Cal State San Bernardino.
