Sylvia Hall developed such a strong bond with Cal Poly Pomona that every time she returned, she earned another degree, including the latest, a master of business administration in 1983. With this eclectic collective education, Hall has excelled at Ameron International Corporation, working as a corrosion engineer and director of the company’s Engineering Development Center.

“My thesis advisor, Dr. Earl Pye, was responsible for steering me into the field of corrosion and corrosion control,” she says. “He took the role of ‘advisor’ to a new level, helping me find my first two corrosion-related jobs.”
A world-renowned authority in cathodic protection of prestressing wire in prestressed concrete pipe, Hall has been asked by UNESCO to consult on a serious corrosion problem in North Africa. Her expertise was made possible by her knowledge of chemistry combined with biology, zoology and microbiology.

“My wide range of coursework from across the disciplines at Cal Poly Pomona has helped me to understand the world of microbiological influenced corrosion and its effect on Ameron’s products,” says Hall, who is a registered NACE (National Association of Corrosion Engineers) Cathodic Protection Specialist.

Hall continues to forge strong ties at Cal Poly Pomona. She was a chemistry lecturer in 1985 and 1986 and has been a member of the Alumni Association since 1974, for which she has volunteered her expertise as a member of the Bylaws, Events and Finance committees. She was chair of the Alumni Association’s 2003 Casino Night, which successfully raised funds to support scholarships on campus. She is also chairing the 2004 event. She is a member of the Cal Poly Pomona College of Engineering CME Industry Action Council, guest lectures for corrosion engineering courses, and has provided internship opportunities for several Cal Poly Pomona engineering students. Hall has participated inthe university’s Professor for a Day event for the past three years.
