Nick Salerno received his bachelor of science degree in kinesiology and a teaching credential from Cal Poly Pomona in 1976. In 1978, he earned his master's degree in educational administration from Azusa Pacific University . After completing his degrees, Salerno entered his chosen vocation as an educator in El Monte.

“The future of our country and our society is directly dependent upon the success of our youth,” he says. “Each human being should be treated with respect and dignity, and it is imperative that we all do our part to ensure that those values are modeled and instilled in our young people.”

Salerno taught at Arroyo High School for 10 years, served as a counselor, and then moved into administration as Arroyo's assistant principal of activities. He continued his upward mobility when he was named El Monte Union High School District assistant superintendent for personnel. He is currently the assistant superintendent for educational services and aspires to serve as district superintendent. Salerno is also active in the community, working in conjunction with the El Monte Police Department on projects involving at-risk teens. The programs have helped reduce gang-related violence in El Monte.

“Human capital is our most precious resource, which is why I have tried to make a positive difference in the lives of our youth,” says Salerno . “It is especially important to me to serve in an area where there are high-need students.”

Salerno has been honored by the H.B. McDaniel Foundation with an individual award for education for his dedication to meeting the emotional and psychological needs of students. In 2001, he was inducted into the McDaniel Foundation's Hall of Fame. In 1997, he received the prestigious Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award for exemplary educational accomplishments beyond the classroom, and was named an Outstanding Administrator by the Los Angeles Bilingual Directors' Association in 1996.

He remains involved with Cal Poly Pomona's College of Education & Integrative Studies by serving as a lecturer, mentor, and motivator to current students.
