Mark Stevens graduated from Cal Poly Pomona’s mechanical engineering program in 1975 and, upon graduation, began what has become an almost 30- year relationship with Fluor Corporation. Initially hired to put his degree to good use on global project assignments, he had an opportunity to learn the corporation from the ground up.

“Mark’s career has been celebrated and admired by his colleagues at Fluor,” states College of Engineering Dean Ed Hohmann. “Perhaps most memorable to Mark was when in 1991 he received the first Tappan Award—named after Dave Tappan, the company’s recently retired chairman and CEO — in recognition of his extraordinary achievements.”

During the last 15 years, Stevens has advanced into positions of increasing authority, including vice president of Power Generation, vice president of Latin America Operations, and president of the Oil, Gas and Power Strategic Business Unit. More recently, he has served as the president of Fluor’s Energy and Chemicals Strategic Business Unit in which he had global responsibility for the company’s business interests in upstream and downstream oil, gas, power, chemical and petrochemical markets. Stevens, who currently reports to the chairman and CEO of Fluor, has responsibility and oversight of risk projects and commercial strategy. Cal Poly Pomona has benefited from its association with Stevens, who has encouraged and coordinated more than $500,000 in gifts to the university. Fluor has also supported the employment of university alumni, participating in recruitment activities via the College of Engineering, Career Center activities, Maximizing Engineering Potential, and the Engineering Lab Revitalization project. Stevens also contributes to leadership opportunities at the university.

“Mark has always supported the appointment of a representative, currently Greg Lee, to the Dean’s Industry Action Council,” says Dean Hohmann, noting how important the council is to the College of Engineering. “Fluor also has traditionally supported campus priorities through its participation in key fundraising activities such as Founders’ Celebration, a scholarship generating event.”

Despite his rigorous international schedule, Stevens is also known for his charitable interests. He not only maintains strong connections with Cal Poly Pomona, but he is also a strong supporter of philanthropic and community interests. Stevens served as Fluor’s executive chair for the United Way Campaign for 2004-2005 and is an active member of the Board of Directors for Children’s Hospital of Orange County.
