William D. Howitt ‘69, civil engineering, has worked in the field of oil and gas pipelines his entire career. He retired in May of 2006 and now does part time consulting work out of his home in Sutherlin, Oregon.

Ron Colvin '60, engineering, worked in the food manufacturing business for 40 years for companies such as General Foods, Lawry's Foods, Spice Islands and Amy Kitchens, holding titles such as engineer and vice president.

Gary Burnett '61, kinesiology, is a retired physical education teacher at Citrus College. He recently completed the Triathlon World Championship in Perth, Australia, which consisted of a one-mile swim, a 25-mile bike ride and a 6.2 mile run.

Jon Wells, '61, electronic engineering, retired in January 2002 from Project Management for BancTec Inc. and moved from Southern California to Austin, Texas in February 2003. He is now enjoying grandchildren and motorcycling in the Texas Hill Country.

Gary W. Bush '62, landscape architecture, retired in Sept. 2001 after 39 years with the California Dept. of Transportation and as the chief landscape architect the past nine years. As the chief, he was responsible for landscaping and restoration of the roadsides including the Scenic Highway Program and the Safety Roadside Rest Program. Also included was working with the Dept. in the development of guidelines for Context Sensitive Solutions involving highway construction. Retirement is great and he and his family are enjoying life in Placerville, CA.

Allen Lang '62, business administration, is the vice president-investments and branch manager of two offices for Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. Lang is an arbitrator for NASD and the New York Stock Exchange. He lives in Langhorne , Pennsylvania with his wife Alice. They have two children, three grandchildren and one great grand child.

Bob Bates '63, agriculture, retired from his position as president and chief credit officer of Kaweah Nation Bank. He lives in the Central Valley.

Gilbert Dominguez '63, horticulture, retired in June 2002 from California Education after serving almost 40 years as an instructor, administrator, and CEO of 3 different community colleges in California. He is now residing in San Diego, CA.

Duane C. Slocum '63, MBA, retired in 2002 from Sanmina-SCI, where he was the human resources manager. He spent 39 years in the human resources field and is currently a substitute teacher, tutor, and reporter for a weekly newspaper. He is also a volunteer for Court Appointed Special Advocate, a group that aids abused and neglected children. He and his wife, Bobbie, live in Colorado Springs, CO and have 20 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. In 1980, Duane was honored as one of Cal Poly Pomona's Distinguished Alumni.

Niaz Mohamed '64, agronomy, was appointed by the Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors to the district's Citizens Advisory Commission to help the district formulate a water conservation plan.

William (Bill) D. Shelton, 1964, business administration, retired from SEH America, a silicon wafer manufacturer in Vancouver, Wash., in 2001, after 19 years in human resources, quality assurance and applications engineering. He also retired from the Air Force Reserves after 12 years active duty and 10 years with the Oregon Air National Guard. Bill and his wife Denise live in Carson, Wash., in the Columbia River Gorge. They have two sons, both living in Vancouver, Wash. He has resumed activity in Amateur Radio, which he began as a 15 year old in Brea. His current call sign is K7SIM. Bill also plays the Great Highland Bagpipes and is a member of Kell's Irish Pipes and Drums. Bill is an adjunct faculty member at Clark College in Vancouver and Columbia Gorge Community College in The Dalles, Oregon, teaching Human Resources and various supervisory management courses.

Frank Cornell ’65, business administration, was named the Distinguished Alumnus for 2004 by Pepperdine Graziadio School of Business and Management. He is the owner and president of FWC Realty Services located in Pacific Palisades, CA. He and his wife, Sherry, have three children.

Joanne Belprez Gunther '65, education (diversified), has taught English, video productions and physical education at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise, Idaho for the past 13 years. She is also the head girls' and boys' track coach. Last May, her girls team finished 2nd in the Idaho state track meet. During the past 10 years, her teams have combined for 4 state championships.

Donald McGraw '65, biology, after 16 years as Associate Provost and Professor of Biology at the University of San Diego has, for the past two years, has been operating his own federal contracting business specializing in biological archival and literature research and writing. He has also released his second book “Edmund Schulman and Living Ruins.” He, his wife, three daughters, and a new grandson continue to do well.

Robert Carlson '66, marketing, is retiring as manager of the Puyallup Fair in Puyallup, WA . He's been running the 17-day fair for 33 years and, under his management, the fairgrounds have grown by 40 percent and fair attendance has doubled. He lives in Edgewood , WA with his wife, Susan. They have two children and three grandchildren.

Kirk deFord '66, english, is an associate in the Technology Center of Northwest Regional Education Laboratory in Portland, OR. He is also a volunteer at Northwest Earth Institute, the Institute for Sustainable Culture and the Earth and Spirit Council.

Jerry Lemberger '66, social science, is director of administration & access at Colorado Legal Services with 16 offices in Colorado Springs and Denver, CO.

Sheryl Lianne Christian '67, social sciences, teaches creative writing and poetry at Sierra College Community Education and Emeritus Programs. She also self-published a book of poetry, Star Kissed Shadows, Divining Poetry in 2004.

Tom Conlon '67, business management, is director of community development for the City of Arcata since 2000. He taught planning and dispute resolution at Humboldt State University from 1997 to 2002. Before that, he was director of planning and building for Humboldt County for 11 years. He also worked as a manager of a national teleprocessing system, Data Dialog, at McDonnell Douglas Corporation's Space Systems Division in Huntington Beach and McDonnell Douglas Aircraft's Information Systems Division in Long Beach, which then became McDonnell Douglas Automation Company. He finished his graduate studies at the University of Southern California and received his MBA in 1968.

Gerald Gewe '67, civil engineering, was appointed by Governor Gray Davis as an alternate member of the Colorado River Board of California.

Steven Hillmer '67, horticulture, owns Hillmer's Luggage in Riverside.

Tom Mauk ’67, business administration, has recently been named Orange County’s executive officer by the Board of Supervisors. Prior to his appointment, he served as Whittier’s city manager for 19 years. He lives in Whittier, CA.

Roland Skumawitz '67, social science, is a superintendent of the Romoland Elementary School District in Riverside County. He was also a teacher and principal in the Ocean View School District in Huntington Beach. He has two kids, a daughter living in NYC pursuing a career in Musical Theatre and a son engaged in professional soccer in Germany. He enjoys the work of building a world in which students can find success, accomplishment and joy.

Lee Russo '67, kinesiology, owns the five-thousand square foot building at the corner of Hollenbeck and Badillo southwest in Covina, but recently sold his Orthopedic Physical Therapy Sports Medicine Practice to two colleagues. In 2002, he went to work at The Claremont Club as a personal trainer and was named employee of the month in September and March. He was recently asked to serve on a committee that would make an attempt to bring "The Club" to a world-renowned status as a premiere health care facility. Lee continues to serve as a volunteer at his church. After graduating from Cal Poly Pomona, he went on to receive a masters' degree in youth ministries and religion at Azusa Pacific University. Russo regularly led Bible study on the campus of Alta Loma High School. His hobbies include snowboarding, water skiing/ wakeboarding, rollerblading, and skydiving.

Enid L. Carroll '68, english, teaches fifth-graders at Nelson Elementary in the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District.

Anthony Chacon '68, landscape architecture, has been promoted to senior associate by Melendrez Design Partners (MDP), a Los Angeles-based landscape architecture design firm. He has been with the firm since 1996. He has also received the Architectural Design Award for Landscape and Recreational Projects from the Los Angeles Business Council for his project, Shane's Inspiration, A Boundless Playground.

Don Driftmeir 68, accounting, a partner in the CPA firm of Vavrinek, Day and Co. in Rancho Cucamonga, was honored as Accountant Advocate of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration. He was also honored at Califonia State University, San Bernardino as the Arrowhead Distinguished Executive Officer.

Ken Coopman '68, finance, real estate & law, is EVP director of commercial banking at California Federal Bank in Glendale.

Robert Johnson ‘68, business administration, ‘74 master's in business administration, is a senior vice president at Quiring Medical in Fresno, CA. He has been a senior healthcare executive for over 30 years. Jonson earned another MBA from the Santa Clara University and received a fellowship from the Healthcare Financial Management Association. He has been married to Lorretta Jonshon for 39 years and he is an avid endurance cyclist with several 100 mile endurance rides completed.

Al Luginbill '68, kinesiology, is head coach and general manager of the AFL's Detroit Fury.

Richard W. Mayer '68, landscape architecture, a partner of Troller-Mayer Associates in Glendale, has been elected trustee for the Southern California Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He is a past president of the Cal Poly Pomona Alumni Association.

Michael N. Miller '68, accounting, is a partner in the CPA firm Leffler Miller Ward & Co. in Encino. Miller specializes in tax compliance and planning, and business consulting.

Joseph Mitchell '68, finance real estate and law, spent over 30 years in US Marine Corps as a Marine Aviator and retired in 1998. He is currently working for Northrop Grumman as Site Manager and Senior Military Analyst at Quantico , VA. Married to wife Chris for over 31 years and has three children and three grandchildren. As a student, Mitchell was involved with ASI and is a former Class Vice President.

Phyllis Murphy ’68, kinesiology, is the recipient of the 2004 YWCA of the West End Women of Achievement Award. She is general director and chief executive officer of Pomona Valley YMCA.

Steve Pingel '68, political science, is a trial attorney specializing in employment law on behalf of employees. He recently settled a $250 million case on behalf of 1700 police officers and firefighters in an age-discrimination class action lawsuit. His office is in Cerritos.

Rick Surrell '68, business administration and information systems, is director of Information Services - Project Office, for L.A. Car Health Plan. He and his wife Sue live in Tustin. Their oldest son Jason is the head women's soccer coach at Azusa Pacific University. Their youngest son Gregg is a police officer for the City of Irvine. They have one granddaughter.

Jim Tennyson '68, mechanical engineering, is director of sales of Bernina of America, Inc. in Aurora, IL, being responsible for managing Bernina's 13 district sales managers and directing all marketing and sales promotions among Bernina's national network of dealers.

F.M. Ameri '69, civil engineering, is senior vice president at RBF Consulting. He was appointed by Gov. Gray Davis to the stat's Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board and has been submitted to the state Senate for confirmation.

Jeanne Bellemin '69, zoology, is a natural science professor at El Camino College in Torrance. She was recently named the 2003 Naturalist of the Year by the Western Society of Naturalists, a group concerned with how organisms function and interact with nature. Since receiving her master's degree from Cal Poly Pomona in 1974, she's taught all disciplines of zoology and field entomology and has traveled extensively in the Galapagos Islands, France, England, Australia, and the Bahamas.

Chuck Brasch '69, biology, '70, teacher credential in science/art (ceramics), has been teaching ceramics at Chaffey High School in Ontario for 33 years since his teacher credentialing, and is due to retire soon.

Dennis Carocci '69, physical education, was selected as the El Dorado County ACSA's Administrator of the Year in 2002. He is currently serving as the Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services in the El Dorado Union High School District.

Bruce Carter '69, civil engineering, was recently named the Director of Technical Services for Hanson Aggregates Western Division. He is also an instructor at UC Berkeley Institute of Transportation Studies. Bruce is serving as the co-chair for the American Concrete Institute's Centennial Convention this fall in San Francisco. He and his wife, Carrie, reside in Tracy, California and have two daughters, Jennifer and Shelby. Jennifer recently graduated from Princeton University and is attending Harvard Law School. Shelby is in her second year at UC San Diego.

John B. Gabriel '69, social sciences, is the vice-president of real estate for LA Fitness International. He was also recently elected Chairman of the Board of the California Business Properties Association, a group for the commercial real estate industry.

John Goggin '69, social sciences, recently retired as an international airline captain for Delta Airlines. He lives in a suburb of Minneapolis , Minnesota with his wife of 36 years, Pricilla. They have one daughter, who lives in New York City and works for Rodale publishers.

Robert S. Johnson, '69, business administration, was class president in 1968. He received an MBA from Santa Clara University and is senior vice president of Quiring Medical, a facility development and planning firm for hospitals and physicians groups throughout California. Quiring Medical is located in Fresno.

John J. Resich Jr. '69, finance, real estate and law, vice president and chairman of the board of Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, was awarded the prestigious Certified Cemetery Funeral Executive designation by the International Cemetery and Funeral Association.

Gary D. Rinehart '69, mathematics, is a director of consulting for Oracle Corporation. Gary has an M.S. degree in management science from United States International University. He has a daughter, Brooke, who is a 1st Lt. in the USAF and a 2000 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy. Gary and his wife Nancy reside in Del Mar.

Penelope Torribio '69, english, is being honored by the Women in Theatre at the Red Carpet Awards Banquet for her work as author/puppeteer and for her community work. In 2002 Torribio toured Southern India giving performances for street and tribal children.
